History and events at Lignano
Lignano is first mentioned in an official document of the fifth century, defined as property of a certain "Lunius". At that time the settlement was already an important port of call and shore marine of commercial interests, given the quality products that the sea could provide hinterland. Its importance is attested by the fact that it was crossed by the Via Annia connecting Concordia to Aquileia. The evidence was found from the roadway by the fishermen of this area. The old traditions says that the actual name "Lignano" comes from "Lupignanum" a latin word but somebody has told that it was also known as the "forest of the wood." The Lignano history is rich with culture and art.
The city organizes a lot of cultural, sporting and musical events in Lignano to animate the city from dusk till night every year, giving the tourists and the inhabitants the opportunity to have fun and meet new friends. The city crossed by channels, enhanced with beautiful sandy strips and dense groups of black pines, oaks and butcher's broom. It also appears the goal and refuge of many fishermen who were concentrated around an ancient church of St. Zaccaria, supposedly built around the second half of 1500 for the will of the owner of the land and located in the center of the tiny settlement known as Pineda.
